Designing for the Unconnected

Connecting the Unconnected
Combining the power of storytelling with one-to-one support, Girls Connect is a first-of-its-kind mobile innovation for girls.

Challenge
Girls affected by the impact of Boko Haram face significant challenges in accessing essential information and resources necessary to navigate through adolescence successfully.

Brief
Develop a service for girls to access entertaining and valuable content via low fi technology - IVR.

How it Works
Girls dial a number and listen to stories containing inspiring, entertaining and educational lessons about their lives. They are then connect to a 'role model': specially-trained call centre operatives who can answer girls’ questions truthfully and talk through the stories they have heard to make them more meaningful and relevant to their own lives.

Lead Service Designer
As Lead Service Designer, I was tasked with combining storytelling, Low Fi IVR technology and a traditional call center set up, to deliver a one of kind service that worked for girls ages 14-17 years old living in Northern Nigeria.

User-Centered Design Approach
Piloted in 2016 and in 2017 in Kano Nigeria, the service went through several iteration phases working with girls in co-creation workshops and live testing in communities.

July 2018 Marketing Flyers
Launched nationally in Nigeria in July of 2018, the program went on to reach and impact the lives of over 300,000 girls.
