Ni Nyampinga
From 2013 to 2016 I lived in Rwanda working as lead Designer in the development and implementation of “Ni Nyampinga,” Rwanda’s first youth brand designed to inspire and equip adolescent girls at a pivotal moment in their lives.

Rwanda's First youth brand
Ni Nyampinga in Kinyarwanda translates as ‘a beautiful girl inside and out who makes wise decisions.’ The brand is made up of a magazine, radio drama and talk show, a network of clubs and digital platforms.

Design & Innovation Manager, Rwanda
Ni Nyampinga launched in November of 2012. I joined the team in March 2013 as Lead Designer and was tasked with ensuring national scale and reach of the brand. Ni Nyampinga needed to reach every girl and every region of Rwanda, no matter how remote.

Brand Ambassadors
Working with a small team we developed and managed a network of Brand Ambassadors. Our thirty Ni Nyampinga Ambassadors were recruited from every District of Rwanda to represent Ni Nyampinga at key events and distributed over 100,000 copies of the magazine every quarter to over 4,000 schools and locations all around Rwanda. We worked in partnership with local development practitioners and government to ensure the safety of our Amabassadors and the effectiveness of magazine distribution.

Mobile
In 2014, we realized quickly that girl’s access to mobile phones was growing VERY fast in Rwanda. We needed to ensure Ni Nyampinga was at the cutting edge of girls access to digital media. We tested, piloted, and launched a number of different low and hi- fi technologies (SMS, USSD, IVR, Mobile Web) Some of our services failed spectacularly, others became very succesful. By 2019 we reached over half a million users averaging monlthy 40,000 calls, 10,000 Texts, and 70,000 site hits.

Clubs
We never set out to create Ni Nyampinga Clubs but girls began self starting clubs as a result of engaging with the brand. I worked closely with a team of reserchers over a period of 6 months to find, document and understand the needs of self starting clubs forming all over Rwanda. We discovered over 10,000 self starting Ni Nyampinga Clubs. The research into self starting clubs informed the development of clubs curriculms, tools and ultimately a strategic shift in the organizatonal strategy as to the contribution of clubs or safe spaces in contibuting to Social Behavoiral Change programming.
